Photography Trends in 2022 - What we disliked & loved
As we moved into 2023, the photography world continued to evolve, with new trends emerging and old ones fading away. In this article, we'll take a look at some of the photography trends that we loved and disliked in 2022.
Loved: Minimalism and simplicity
One of the trends that we loved in 2022 was minimalism and simplicity. Many photographers embraced a stripped-down aesthetic, using clean lines, simple backgrounds, and uncluttered compositions to create visually striking images. This trend was particularly evident in the world of product photography, where minimalism has become the norm.
Disliked: Overly edited and unrealistic images
On the flip side, one trend that we disliked in 2022 was the proliferation of overly edited and unrealistic images. Thanks to the rise of more and more editing software, it's become easier than ever to manipulate photos beyond recognition. While there's certainly a place for creative editing, we found that many images were so heavily processed that they lost their authenticity and connection to reality.
Loved: Documentary-style photography
Another trend that we loved in 2022 was the growing popularity of documentary-style photography. More and more photographers are turning their lenses towards real-life stories and capturing candid, unposed moments that tell a powerful story. This trend is particularly evident in the world of photojournalism, where photographers are using their skills to shed light on important social issues.
Disliked: Forced posing and fake smiles
Another trend that we disliked in 2022 was the use of forced, unnatural poses. Many photographers were guilty of posing their subjects in ways that didn't feel comfortable or natural. This trend can result in images that look stiff and posed, rather than candid and authentic.
Loved: Authenticity
In 2022, we saw a trend toward more authentic, real-life photography. With the kind of year that we had in 2020 & 2021 where it seemed like time went by so fast with not enough memory, photographers turned to capturing the everyday moments that were often taken for granted. This trend is expected to continue into 2023, with people valuing authenticity over perfection.
Disliked: Lack of creativity
With the rise of social media, it's easy for photographers to fall into the trap of copying other photographers' work. While it's natural to be inspired by other artists, copying their work is not only unoriginal but can also be considered plagiarism. In 2023, we hope to see more originality and creativity in photography.
Disliked: The Business Approach to Photography
We saw many photographers not take the business approach to photography. As their brand grew, they remained and operated like a hobby. While there are photographers that might have chosen not to commercialize this, the majority had just not learned the business side of their passion.
